Games Stories

This weeks reading was a fun, as I got to learn about story telling in games and creating them.

Getting to read What Every Game Developer Needs to Know about Story from Game Developer gave an insight into how vital story telling is for games, and how they can make or break a game. They mention how increasingly important the quality of your story is as it continues to rise with the more games release through the years. The basis on which any story is built from dates back to even Aristotle, where each and every story has. These points being things such as there is always a protagonist in which we experience the story through, their world is thrown into disarray, they try to solve it with regular means but fail, they take a risk, the hero pushes back, the discover a new thing, they take a greater risk, the hero then overcomes their obstacle and usually gain what they sought. I've heard about this structure before but getting to learn how to properly develop upon that beginning layout sparked my interest and was certainly a pleasure to read.

While reading up for this post, I was reminded of this video I watched years ago by Extra Credits, The Three Pillars of Game Writing - Plot, Character, Lore. The video goes into talking about how not all games require equal amounts of these pillars to create a compelling story. Dividing a story into these sections are vital into figuring out how to apply each into your game. They explain quite well the aspects of each pillar and their importance, I would highly recommend watching as it's a short video and easy to digest, but provides a good understanding to viewers.

Overall this was a fun reading as I enjoy learning about game lore and stories, so diving into this felt no different from what I do usually.
