Game Design Document

This week for our project we got the opportunity to learn about Game Design Documents (GDD) and make one for our own game.

When I started my GDD I honestly felt a little overwhelmed at first, following the layout on Dundoc I had no idea what some of the subsections were, and panicked a little that I missed something crucial during our project research and building. Once I actually got into filling out the sections I did understand like game introduction, game play, etc. This really helped me realise that I didn't have to follow the template of others GDD's exactly like they did it, but mold my one around what information I have made up for my game currently.

Potential Map Layout I made

Getting to make this GDD was actually really enjoyable and relieving. Just having my ideas and thoughts written down and collected somewhere really helps ease my nerves about this game creation, and allows me to change it on the fly if I don't find that one of my ideas work well for my game.

If you'd like to check out my game ideas you can find it using this link to my Game Design Document, I will be updating it throughout the weeks, so you can stop by each week to see if something big has been added or changed.

  1. Man I can't wait to see your idea become a reality, It gives me all the good vibes of a game that can make me sink hours into it :D The idea of the mannequins chasing you is such a clever way to scare people and also keep the game simple, I do wonder how complex will the AI be? I feel a simple AI would be good with the time allocated to us like in horror games that youtubers play, but maybe if you had a little time and drive you could make it a bit complex like certain colour mannequins freeze when you look at them, or one where the more you look at it the more aggressive it gets, kinda like SCP. Can't wait to play this game my guy!

  2. Hello Brandon , great blog post , really good game design document aswell , it gives a good overview of the game you want to create . It seems like a simple game but the addition of some mannequins chasing after you adds so much to the game, have you considered what happens when the mannequins do actually catch up to you, do you die straight away or will you have the opportunity to fight them off, also would there be a certain amount of time so you can prepare yourself for this chase or does it just start straight away. I like the idea of the low poly graphics , it will add a unique style to your game , looking forward to seeing your finale game .

  3. Hello again Brandon. Once again I can relate to you. At first I found the very word Games Design Document to be intimidating. Always a relieve to hear that somebody else is in the same boat😅. Glad to hear you had a good experience with the Games Design Document. Great to know that we can change our Games Design Document when we need to. Best of luck with your game, can't wait to try it.

  4. Hi Brandon, I love your game idea. It reminds me a little bit of slenderman, especially considering the fact that the mannequins you displayed in your games design documents look really creepy like slenderman does. I might try out dundoc as well for the games design documents as the layout of the document in the video provided in the reading class may require a lot of effort to implement into the word document. I cannot wait to see what your game is like, especially considering that it is a survival horror and keep the player really engaged. I wonder what the visuals are going to be like when the player dies, I'm really curious to know. I loved reading about your games design document

  5. Hi Brandon

Brilliant read I must say and what a Brilliant idea. Your really giving the old school playstation 2 vibes with this game with the way your describing this game. I would love to see more of this. but the Game Design Document was very informative and was able to make me understand on how this game will run. I can't wait to see more. Best of luck for the rest of this semester- Luke

  6. Hey Brandon,

Wow this game is really something. This is so different to any other game idea I have read about. It seems quite complex but it would be so cool if you could execute this as you have written. Your Game Design Document was very well done. The layout was clear and to the point, with the perfect amount of information. The concept of having a map and different scenes to play in within the game is a great idea, although seems like it would be difficult to create. I'm sure you know what you're doing anyway 😁. I am particularly looking forward to seeing how your game turns out as I have not seen an idea like it. Can't wait to play!

  7. Hey Brandon,
This game seems so intriguing and interesting. It is so unique to anyone else game in this module.
I must add that the layout was simplistic, with just the necessary amount of information.
I cannot wait to see the final product of your game. I hope is all goes well for you Alex.
