Game Fun

What Makes A Game Fun by Tim Ruswick

This week we read and got to learn about gamification and how fun is incorporated into it.

Kahoot! on National Geographic Society

From what I gathered, gamification is the best described as try to add game like characteristics to a task to make it more fun. An example that comes to mind that I have experienced is Kahoot!. Kahoot! is an application used to take part in and create quizzes on any topic you can think of. This application is very popular in schools and I even recall playing it in class as a way for our teacher to help make the recap of a topic fun. The game involved multiple choice questions and anyone who could continuously answer questions right would be rewarded with a streak which increased their point gain the higher their streak was. They would also be rewarded by getting to see their name on the leaderboard of the people taking part, and if in the top 3 their name would be shown on a podium.

I got to read more about gamification from Gamification Design: What's fun got to do with it? on the site Megamification. In their press review they state there are four keys to fun; Novelty, Challenge, Friendship, and Meaning. Each one of these offer the player new experiences and evoke emotions which helps engross them. Also according to Megamification, the best selling games usually offer at least three of the four keys.

Reading up on gamification was fun and I enjoyed learning about the four keys of fun for games as it gives me a better insight into the noticeable patterns behind game design, and what links all of my own most favourite games.
